Violence In Sports Essays - Behavior, Human Behavior, Sports
Violence In Sports With the increase in society taking a stance against violence by many people, sports has become an area where some feel that the violent acts such as the hitting and fighting that occurs should be eliminated. You can not change something that has been around for so long because it would change the aspect of the game to something completely different. The elimination of violence should not be done in sport because the violence is a part of the game which would only hurt its popularity. The reasons that the violence is occurring in sport is due to six theories according to John Schneider. "The violence in sport mirrors the violence found in society, violence as the result of economic incentives, the influence of crowd behavior on player violence, genetic causation for player aggression, learning theory and player aggression, and psychological stress and player violence" (Lapchick 230). The theories of sport mirroring society, violence as a result of economic incentive, and the influence of the crowd behavior are the theories that I feel are responsible for the increasing violence in sports. Most people when involved in a highly stressful situation where violence is around would probably resort to a fight to resolve their differences. In sport, why should we expect any difference. In events such as hockey games, where people are expected to hit and make body contact, sooner or later a fight will break out and the fans will yell and scream for their favorite player involved. Like anything, if people around us are applauding us for a certain act we have done, we will try to do it over so that we will continue to be praised. In sports, there are some players whose only role on the team is to protect and enforce the unwritten rules of the game such as in hockey where it is not right to fight or hit a Wayne Gretezy or Mario Lemieux type of star player! . His economic incentive is to protect the team and if he does not, a new line of work might be in the future. All three of those theories relate closely to the role of the fighter in sport and why it is that he does commit the acts of violence. When leagues such as the National Football League (NFL) or the National Hockey League (NHL) are asked to try and remove the violence from their sport, they are hesitant because it is not what the fans want. "Bryant and Zillman report that television viewers enjoy NFL plays more when they are rough and violent" (McPherson 294). Why should these leagues remove the violence that is occurring if they are making money and keeping people employed. The fans of the games want to see these situations and eliminating the fighting aspect would hurt the support. When I watch a hockey game or any other sporting event with contact, there is nothing better than seeing a good fight take place. "One of the best-selling videos in parts of the Northeastern United States has been a collection of the best fights in the NHL" (McPherson 294). Even former NHL president Clarence Campbell felt that the violence taking place in his sport was called for and was reluctant to remove the fighting and the body contact because he knew that it is what the majority of hockey fans want. Fighting is a well-established safety valve for players. If violence ceases to exist, it will not be the same game. Insofar as fighting is part of the show, we certainly sell it. We do not promote it. We tolerate it and we bring it under disciplinary control which we believe satisfies the public (Snyder 201). Its better that the violence take place between two willing combatants such as in sports than in a situation involving spousal abuse where the majority of the times the female is being attacked against her consent. Allowing people not to be able vent their frustrations through sport in my mind would increase the violence that is happening away from the playing field. It is a known fact that sports does keep kids off the street and away from gangs which is why you see so many athletic and boxing clubs being run out of the inner city. It is allowing the youth to take that hostility out on a willing participant who is ready and consenting rather than against an innocent bystander. Some individuals have gone as far as saying that sport is creating a deviant subculture where

How to Do Logging in C# With Log4net
How to Do Logging in C# With Log4net When you write computer code in C#, its a good idea to include logging code. That way, when something goes wrong, you know where to start looking. The Java world has been doing this for years. You can use log4net for this purpose. It is part ofà Apache log4jà 2, a popular open-source logging framework. This isnt the only .NET logging framework; there are many. However, the Apache name is trusted and the original Java logging framework has been around for more thanà 15 years. Why Use a Log4net Logging Framework? When an application or server crashes, you are left wondering why. Was it a hardware failure, malware, maybe a Denial of Service attack, or some odd combination of keys that manages to bypass all your code checks? You just dont know. You need to find out why a crash occurred so it can be corrected. With logging enabled, you might be able to seeà why it happened. Getting Started Download the log4netà file from the Apache log4net website. Verify the integrity of the downloaded files using the PGP signature or MD5 checksums. The checksums are not as strong indicators as the PGP signature. Using Log4net Log4net supports seven levels of logging from none to all in increasing priority. These are: OFFFATALERRORWARNINFODEBUGALL The higher levels include all the lower ones. When debugging, using DEBUGà shows all, but on production, you might only be interested in FATAL. This choice can be made at the component level programmatically or in an XML Config file. Loggers and Appenders Forà flexibility, log4net uses loggers, appenders, and layouts. A logger is an object that controls logging and is an implementation of the ILog interface, which specifies five boolean methods: isDebugEnabled, IsInfoEnabled, IsWarnEnabled, IsErrorEnabled and IsFatalEnabled. It also specifies the five methods- Debug, Info, Warn, Error andFatal- along with overloads and five formatted string versions. You can see the full ILog interface in the log4net online manual. Loggers are assigned one of the levels but not ALL or OFF, only the other five. Appenders control where the logging goes. It can be into a database, to an in-memory buffer, to the console, to a remote host, to a text file with rolling logs, the Windows Event Log, or even to email via SMTP. There are 22à appenders in all, and they can be combined so you have plenty of choices. Appenders are appended (hence the name) to a logger. Appendersà filter events by matching substrings, event level, range of levels and start of the logger name. Layouts Finally, there are seven layouts that can be associated with an Appender. These control how the events message is logged and can include exception text, timestamp layouts, and XML elements. Configuring With XML Although configuring can be done programmatically, it can also be done with XML Config files. Why would you prefer config files over code changes? Simple, its far easier to have a support guy make a change to a config file than have to get a programmer to change code, test and redeploy a new version. So config files are the way to go. The simplest possible path is to addà App.config your project, as shown inà the example below: ?xml version1.0 encodingutf-8 ?configurationà à configSectionsà à à à section namelog4net typelog4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,Log4net/à à /configSectionsà à log4netà à à à rootà à à à à à level valueDEBUG/à à à à à à appender-ref refLogFileAppender /à à à à /rootà à à à appender nameLogFileAppender typelog4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender à à à à à à file value log.txt/à à à à à à appendToFile valuetrue /à à à à à à rollingStyle valueSize /à à à à à à maxSizeRollBackups value5 /à à à à à à maximumFileSize value10MB /à à à à à à staticLogFileName valuetrue /à à à à à à layout typelog4net.Layout.PatternLayoutà à à à à à à à conversionPattern value%d [%t] %-5p %c %m%n /à à à à à à /layoutà à à à /appenderà à /log4net/configuration The log4net online documentation explains all the config file fields. à Having set up App.config, add using log4net and this line: [assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(Watch true)] Plus the actual logger has to be fetched with a call to LogManager.GetLogger(...). The GetLogger is usually called with the typeof(class) that its used in, but this function call also fetches that: System.Reflection.MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType This example shows both in with one commented, so you can choose.à using log4net;[assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(Watch true)]namespace gvmake{à à à à class Programà à à à {à à à à à à à à private static readonly ILog log LogManager.GetLogger (System.Reflection.MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType) ;à à à à à à à à //private static readonly ILog log LogManager.GetLogger(typeof (Program)) ;à à à à à à à à static void Main(string[] args)à à à à à à à à {à à à à à à à à à à à à log.Debug(Application Starting) ;à à à à à à à à }à à à à }}

Medical Information Confidentiality Research Paper
Medical Information Confidentiality - Research Paper Example The questionnaires were distributed in five primary care clinics. The receptionists in these clinics were requested to issue questionnaires to all the patents who visited the clinics. The survey was intended to run for three weeks and it was aimed at collecting 100 questionnaires (Whiddett et al. 532). Patients were requested to answer all the questions and put them in a collective box in the respective clinics. Alternatively, they could return them using pre-paid envelopes. The research team did not monitor the issuance of the questionnaires or make attempts to identify repeat respondents and non respondents (Whiddett et al. 532). This was the major limitation facing the exercise however; it did not impact on the findings as the sample size was adequate. The survey was representative enough as the clinics were chosen to represent a wide range of demographics. The questionnaire covered three key areas. These are basic demographics, attitudes towards sharing different kinds of informa tion and patientsââ¬â¢ knowledge towards information sharing practices. Secondly, secondary data was used to complement the findings that were obtained from the survey. The information will be collected from a peer reviewed sources, credible internet sources and medical journals that have conducted similar studies. A comprehensive study of past case studies reveals that medical confidentiality in the health sector is at a risk of getting eroded due to the use of the current technology. The respondents are wary about sharing their personal information to various parties and the study reveals that most of them are not aware of the increasing information sharing practice in the medical field (Levenson 20). Data Collection Instrument: Questionnaire Tick the appropriate answer 1. My age is: 18 to 30 years 30 to 60 years Above 60 years 2. I am Male Female 3. My ethnicity or race? (Tick one) White Americans Black Americans Asian Americans Hispanic and Latino Americans Other 4. How much information do you have concerning those who can access your medical records? In addition to, it helps to establish the age bracket that attends the clinics often. The second question concerning gender helps to determine the relationship between gender and attitudes towards medical information confidentiality. The third question is aimed at finding out the level of awareness about medical confidentiality (Whiddett et al. 534). It also gives information on varying attitudes across ethnic groups. In a nutshell, the first three questions are interested in determining the primary demographics which

Civil Servants in Cyprus and the United Kingdom Research Proposal
Civil Servants in Cyprus and the United Kingdom - Research Proposal Example Though both countries are members of the European Union, they have quite different histories. Cyprus's past has been more turbulent in the past several hundred years than the UK. Great Britain was, of course, the most far reaching empire in the world - as such it developed an extensive civil service during the Victorian era. The UK's civil service has undergone many policy changes over time. This paper's focus will be on the changes and administration of the past half century, especially that from 1993 to the present year. The rational for this paper is to propose and guide future research. As such a preliminary literature search has been completed. Other steps and methods in this research process will be discussed in this paper. These steps and processes may include: (1) further literature search, particularily intenal government doucments and reports, and internal civil service literature such as departmental newspapers, (2) one or more suverys, and the analysis of those surveys, and (3) interviews if and where possible. This paper begins with a discussion of the details of the preliminary research, then continues on to discuss the three other steps and approaches above. Scholarly information on Cyprus is much m... As information is limited on Cyprus, a discussion of training methods of civil servants will be included as a way to further understand the evaluation of civil servants in Cyprus. Information on Cyprus, like the United Kingdom has gone through several changes in human resources management training and evaluation practices since the 1960s (Mann , 2001). Using information from Mann's 2001 article, and from sources that Mann cited in that article, this paper will discuss three topics for each time period. The first topic will be the reason(s) that training is provided (What is the purpose of training) (Mann , 2001). The second topic will be how the training is designed (What approach is taken to training) (Mann , 2001). The final topic will be what the training covers (What is the focus of the training) (Mann , 2001). More attention will be given to the last topic, as it is at the heart of what the civil servants will be evaluated on later. United Kingdom An inital literature search was done on the United Kingdom, as the orginal plan for the research was to compare civil service evaluation methods between Cyprus and the UK. However, like many research processes, the orginal plan has changed to just focus on Cyprus. The information on the UK will still be used on occasion in the finished paper and so has been included here - both to document the work completed to date, and to discuss information that might be used in the final paper. There is a wealth of information available on the civil service in the United Kingdome. Of particular interest to the proposed paper are: Tony Bovid and Ken Russell's 2007 article in Public Administration "Civil Service Reform in the UK, 1999-2005: Revolutionary Failure or Evolutionary

State-Sponsored Terrorism: The Relationship between Hizballah and the I
Most of the countries involved in state-sponsored terrorism make modest attempts to disassociate themselves with terrorist organizations. These countries do this in hopes that the United Nations will not place sanctions. More often than not, these countries continue their support of various terrorist groups. They support the terrorist organization in various ways: financially, training, supplies. Iran has remained the most active state sponsor of terrorism to date (State Department, 2013). Iran supports several different terrorist organizations, including Hamas, Palestine Islamic Jihad, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command and Hizballah. Often times, Iran is involved in the planning and support of different terrorist attacks. Iran has most notably assisted the terrorist organization, Hizballah, with training, weapons and funding. The Iranian government has also allowed Hizballah to use Iran as a safe haven for any terrorists that might need to go underground to hide if they have been involved in terrorist attacks and are currently on a watch list. This paper will first define terrorism, as well as state-sponsored terrorism. Second, the paper will give background on the terrorist organization of Hizballah; to include why the organization was first created and what attacks the organization is responsible for. Third, the paper will discuss the ideology and goals of Hizballah and how their ideology and goals fit into those of the Iranian government. This paper will also exam the relationship between Hizballah and the Iranian government and how that relationship affects the United States and its interests in the Middle East, mainly Israel. Mcdonald Case Study
McDonaldââ¬â¢s: On a Customer-Focused Mission More than half a century ago, Ray Kroc, a 52-year-old salesman of milk-shake-mixing machines, set out on a mission to transform the way Americans eat. Kroc bought a chain of seven stores already existing for $2. 7 million. From the start, Kroc preached a motto of QSCVââ¬âquality, service, cleanliness, and value. These goals became mainstays in McDonaldââ¬â¢s customer-focused mission statement.Applying these values, the company perfected the fast-food conceptââ¬âdelivering convenient, good-quality food at affordable prices. McDonaldââ¬â¢s grew quickly to become the worldââ¬â¢s largest fast-feeder. The fast-food giantââ¬â¢s more than 32,000 restaurants worldwide now serve 60 million customers each day, racking up system-wide sales of more than $79 billion annually. In the mid-1990s, however, McDonaldââ¬â¢s fortunes began to turn. The company appeared to fall out of touch with both its mission and its customers.Amer icans were looking for fresher, better-tasting food and more contemporary atmospheres. They were also seeking healthier eating options. In a new age of health-conscious consumers and $3 muffin and coffee at Starbucks, McDonaldââ¬â¢s seemed a bit out of step with the times. McDonaldââ¬â¢s was struggling to find its identity among its competitors and changing consumer tastes. The company careened from one failed idea to another. It tried to keep pace. None of these things worked.However, McDonaldââ¬â¢s continued opening new restaurants at a ferocious pace, as many as 2,000per year. The new stores helped sales, but customer service and cleanliness declined because the company couldnââ¬â¢t hire and train good workers fast enough. Meanwhile, McDonaldââ¬â¢s increasingly became a target for animal-rights activists, environmentalists, and nutritionists, who accused the chain of contributing to the nationââ¬â¢s obesity epidemic with ââ¬Å"super sizeâ⬠French fries and sodas as well as Happy Meals that lure kids with the reward of free toys.Although McDonaldââ¬â¢s remained the worldââ¬â¢s most visited fast-food chain, sales growth slumped, and its market share fell by more than 3 percent between 1997 and 2003. In 2002, the company posted its first-ever quarterly loss. In early 2003, a troubled McDonaldââ¬â¢s announced a turnaround planââ¬âwhat it now calls its ââ¬Å"Plan to Win. â⬠At the heart of this plan was a new mission statement that refocused the company on its customers. The companyââ¬â¢s mission was changed from ââ¬Å"being the worldââ¬â¢s best quick-service restaurantâ⬠to ââ¬Å"being our customersââ¬â¢ favorite place and way to eat.The new plan centered on five basics of an exceptional customer experience: people, products, place, price, and promotion. Under the Plan to Win, the goal was to get ââ¬Å"better, not just bigger. â⬠The company invested in improving the food, the service, the atmosph ere, and marketing at existing outlets. McDonaldââ¬â¢s redecorated its restaurants with clean, simple, more-modern interiors and amenities such as live plants, wireless Internet access, and flat-screen TVs showing cable news.Play areas in some new restaurants now feature video games and even stationary bicycles with video screens. To make the customer experience more convenient, McDonaldââ¬â¢s stores now open earlier to extend breakfast hours and stay open longer to serve late-night dinersââ¬âmore than one-third of McDonaldââ¬â¢s restaurants are now open 24 hours a day. Moreover, MacDonald added healthier options, such as Chicken McNuggets made with white meat, a line of Snack Wraps, low-fat ââ¬Å"milk jugs,â⬠apple slices, Premium Salads.In 2008, when the stock market lost one-third of its valueââ¬âthe worst loss since the Great Depressionââ¬â McDonaldââ¬â¢s stock gained nearly 6 percent. Through 2010, as the economy and the restaurant industry as a wh ole continued to struggle, McDonaldââ¬â¢s outperformed its competitors by a notable margin. QUESTIONS 1. What are the main environmental factors that affected MacDonald marketing strategy and way of doing business? 2. How MacDonald responded to the changing environment? (How these changes affected its marketing mix? )
